BORING, Ore. -- Hundreds of friends, family and community members gathered at a public funeral for Emilio Hoffman Sunday afternoon at the Good Shepherd Community Church.

The 14-year-old freshman from Reynolds High School in Troutdale was fatally shot by a classmate on June 10.

Police say Jared Padgett, the 15-year-old shooter, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being confronted by officers.

Jennifer Hoffman, Emilio's mother, spoke at the memorial about the sense of purpose her son provided for her.

"Emilio, the day you were born was the true beginning of me, of who I was supposed to be. I needed to be your mom," she said.

A soccer ball sat on top of Hoffman's casket at the service, and kids wearing soccer jerseys lined the seats.

Friends said Hoffman, an avid soccer fan and player, was "warm-hearted, honest, smart and funny."

His soccer coach said he had a great sense of humor, but also took care of business.

"We loved Emilio for being him: funny, a jokester, captain, leader," said Ronaldo Soriano.

The church's pastor asked attendees to celebrate the joy in Hoffman's life instead of his tragic death.

"This day, we're going to celebrate his life," said Pastor Steve Keels. "We're going to do it by remembering him, and we're going to do it by celebrating him. Even though, in this room, we know what took place was wrong and evil and bad."

In the wake of Emilio's death, Jennifer Hoffman urged parents not to take their children for granted.

"Love your kids. Hug your kids every day. And live with no regrets," she said. "I don't have any regrets with Emilio. None. And he knew that."

Hoffman wore No. 29 for his high school soccer team. His mother was presented at the memorial with an official Timbers jersey bearing his number.

His older brother wore the jersey when he walked across the stage during his graduation ceremony earlier this month.
