PORTLAND, Ore. Snow and ice kept all major school districts in the Portland area closed again on Monday but a thaw that set in allowed classes to resume Tuesday.

The decision to tell 47,000 Portland Public School students to stay home Monday came Sunday evening, allowing parents a chance to make arrangements.

They look at the weather forecast and they actually go out and drive the streets. We also take a look at the side streets and the sidewalks; a lot of our kids walk to neighborhood schools so it s not just the buses we re concerned with, said Portland Public Schools spokeswoman Christine Miles.

Sarah Steiner has three boys, so her work-from-home day turned into another snow day with the kids. She understood the decision to close but is looking forward to getting back to normal.

I would say that last night I was ready to pack lunches for today and was ready to send the kids out the door, but one more day was a little more than we expected, Steiner said. I do think they made the right call in canceling today, just because it is pretty yucky out there.
