LINCOLN CITY, Ore. A Lincoln County judge declared a mistrial due to a hung jury Wednesday in the case of a driver who hit and killed a man dribbling a soccer ball along Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast.
On May 14, 52-year-old Scott Von Hiatt hit and killed 42-year-old Richard Swanson (pictured top) while he
was on the first leg of a journey from Seattle to Brazil to raise awareness for the One World Futbol charity.
Hiatt stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators and was eventually free to go. On June 17, however, Lincoln City police arrested him for criminally negligent homicide.
A final resolution conference was scheduled for Feb. 18.
Swanson embarked on his journey on May 1 from Seattle s Space Needle and hoped to make it to Sao Paulo in time for the 2014 World Cup.
Swanson stayed two nights in Vancouver, Wash. before heading toward the coast. He spent a night in Lincoln City before he set off down the highway for Newport.
The afternoon Swanson was killed, he posted a video on YouTube of himself walking along the beach.
