SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- A three-alarm fire destroyed a house Wednesday evening east of Salem. The occupants got out safely.

Marion County Fire District No. 1 Battalion Chief Patrick Wineman says firefighters were initially held back by multiple explosions in the attached garage.

The Statesman Journal reports more than 40 firefighters spent two hours fighting the fire with help from Salem firefighters and backup from nearby fire districts.
