PORTLAND -- He s just 11 years old, but Ethan Chung has his own website and does golf instructional videos on YouTube.
Ethan is from Northwest Portland and the number one Pee Wee golfer in the state.
He won the title for 8-to 11-year-olds at the 83rd Oregon Junior Amateur championships in June on The Great Blue golf course at Heron Lakes.
Ethan, who just finished fifth grade, learned the game from his father and instructional books.
I was about three years old and my dad played golf and I was with him on the range, says Ethan. I saw him playing and I thought it was very interesting and very fun and that s how I got started and I ve been playing ever since.
Ethan learned quickly and by the time he was six, shot a 28 on a short course for 9 holes. Now he carries an official USGA seven handicap.
Yes, Ethan is good on the course and on camera. He has hosted more than 30 videos on golf including how to hit a power fade.
His father Ming-Ying Chung is a software engineer. It was his idea to start the videos on You Tube four years ago, to help Ethan with English and the game of golf.
I teach math in school, says Chung I figure if you can teach math, that means you can really understand it, not just you can do math. So, I guess the same concept can be applied to golf as well.
Ethan practices nearly every day during the summer and plays two or three times a week and keeps the videos coming.
Mostly, I get positive feedback, says Ethan, like good comments about like, yeah that s great and stuff like that.
Chung says he hopes to be a pro some day and maybe, a golf commentator on TV.
