PORTLAND - A public memorial was planned for this Saturday for late Sen. Mark O. Hatfield.

The service will start at 1 p.m. at the Village Baptist Church, 330 SW Murray Boulevard in Beaverton.

A second memorial service was planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Statep Capitol in Salem.

A procession was held Wednesday to the Willamette National Cemetery for the private funeral of Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield.

His funeral began at 11 a.m., at the St. Elizabeth Church in Southwest Portland. Then, the funeral motorcade left the church shortly after noon and traveled along I-84 to I-205 and on to the cemetery, where they were scheduled to arrive around 1 p.m.

Hatfield died in Portland Sunday night at age 89 at a care center. The cause of death was not immediately released.

Hatfield had become increasingly frail over the years. He was elected governor of Oregon in 1958 and re-elected in 1962 before winning his first U.S. Senate campaign in 1966.

He served five terms in the Senate, from 1967 to 1997. Hatfield is best known at the national level for his pacifist ways, which often put him at odds with fellow Republicans but endeared him to many Oregonians.
