WEST LINN, Ore. Transportation officials closed one southbound lane of Interstate 205 on the Tualatin River Bridge for several hours Tuesday so crews could repair joint damage.

Drivers were experiencing major delays throughout the day, but the roadway was reopened just before 3 p.m.

A joint on the bridge apparently came loose and popped out. Oregon Department of Transportation crews said the joint stretches across about 15 feet of pavement.

The failed bridge joint was found along I-205 southbound near the Stafford Road exit. The damage was first reported around 9 a.m.

ODOTofficials said bridge joints don t affect the structural safety of the bridge, so there s no danger of collapse. They said the joints serve as a buffer between bridge sections, which expand and contract depending on the weather.

The bridge joints are routinely checked every two years and repaired, if necessary. But sometimes they still come loose without warning.
