WEST LINN, Ore. -- A West Linn man is undergoing a mental evaluation after firing bullets inside his apartment Tuesday morning.
West Linn Police said the 28-year-old man called 911 around 6:30 a.m., saying there was someone trying to break into his unit at the Hidden Village Apartments on Robin Circle.
Police said the man, who they are not identifying yet, was frightened for his safety and armed with a handgun. He was home alone and had barricaded himself inside his bedroom closet.
The man fired 6-7 shots through the closet door, into walls and shattered his upstairs bedroom window, police said. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the bullets did not enter any other apartment units.
West Linn and Lake Oswego police responded very cautiously and determined there was no one trying to break in and that the man was having a mental crisis.
Officers, holding up their weapons and using riot shields for protection, used a bullhorn to calmly talk the man into coming outside unarmed and surrendering.
They said he cooperated and was evaluated by paramedics before going to the hospital for a mental evaluation. Any arrest or possible gun charges will depend on his evaluation.
