GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- A wind-driven brush fire has forced some evacuations around the rural Southern Oregon community of Williams and apparently burned at least one house.

Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson said deputies spread out Friday afternoon alerting residents along Watergap Road and Lower Powell Creek Road and cordoned off an area where the fire was threatening one home with a large propane tank.

Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Brian Ballou says the fire moved quickly through about 200 acres, including a stand of timber, and brisk winds were pushing it toward tall grass in some farm fields.

He says a telltale plume of black smoke indicates at least one house burned.

Two helicopters and an air tanker were working the fire, along with both wildland and structural firefighters.
