PORTLAND The grandfather of a young man gunned down outside a Portland gas station Wednesday said his family is trying to come to terms with what happened, and understand why police think the shooting was gang-related.
Edward Paden Jr. died of four gunshot wounds to the chest after he was shot in broad daylight near 60th Avenue and Killingsworth Street.
I really don t know what to think about it right now. I mean, that s my grandson. He s gone, said Henry Melson, the 18-year-old victim s grandfather. He d just walk over and say, Grandpa, I love you.
Police said they have reason to believe the killing was gang-related. But Paden s family has insisted that he was not a gang-member.
He wasn t in no gang, Melson said. The only gang that he was in was his family.
Thursday Paden s friends created a makeshift memorial with flowers and balloons at the place where he took his last breath.
No one has reported seeing the gunman, although some people in the area said they heard the shots. Paden was pronounced dead at the scene.
