PORTLAND -- Auditions for the Portland Teen Idol competition start Friday evening and continue through the weekend.

Students get $250 worth of free workshop access just for trying out, said Dennis Gleason of Dark Wing Productions. The winner gets about $3,000 in cash and prizes.

Gleason said former finalists made the American Idol Top 100 this season.

Haley Johnson, who made the American Idol Top 24, will be on hand for the auditions Friday. Portland Teen Idol 2007 winner Jordan Thompson, who made it to the Nashville Star Top 25, will also be there.

The program is sponsored by the City of Portland Dept. of Parks and Recreation.
