PORTLAND -- A 16-year-old girl was shot Sunday night during a friend s Sweet 16 birthday party in Southeast Portland, witnesses said.
A man in his late teens or early twenties opened fire just after 11 p.m. on a group of people at the American Legion hall near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Mill Street, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau.
The 16-year-old victim was the only person hit by the gunfire, and was likely not the intended target, Simpson said. The victim suffered non life-threatening gunshot wounds to her upper body.
The shooter ran eastbound from the scene and police have not found him. He was described as an African American man, about 5-foot-11, with a thin build.
Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call police at (503) 823-3333.
This was the third gang-related shooting since Friday evening, Simpson said.
