PORTLAND -- An 80-foot tall elm tree came toppling over onto the Firestone Tire Center on West Burnside Street and Northwest Park Avenue this morning.
The City of Portland Urban Forestry Department estimated the tree was least 100 years old.
The tree fell, leaning on the roof of the tire center and no one was hurt. Park Avenue was closed in the area for several hours during the cleanup.
The forestry crew said all the rain has made the ground in the Park Blocks very loose and a little bit of wind can easily topple the trees.
They have been examining many of the older trees in the last few months, but this particular tree did not show any warning signs.
At one point Monday morning, Portland General Electric reported about 4,000 homes without power because of trees falling on power lines.
Washington County has reported many streets are closed or partially closed because of flooding.
