PORTLAND A mail carrier s bear mace went off inside a Northeast Portland post office Wednesday, causing employees to flee the building.
Around 9:20 a.m., firefighters showed up at the Parkrose Post Office at 4048 NE 122nd Avenue after around 10 employees evacuated the building complaining of a strong odor, said Lt. Rich Chatman with Portland Fire & Rescue.
Investigators discovered the odor came from pepper spray labeled bear spray, which belonged to a delivery person and accidental discharged in the building, Chatman said.
The delivery person noticed the pepper spray went off and took it outside, but it still got into the ventilation system, firefighters told KGW at the scene.
Three employees were taken to the hospital with mild symptoms after inhaling the spray.
Firefighters cleared the post office before 10:30 a.m. and employees returned to work.
