PORTLAND One day after a five-alarm fire destroyed a five-story apartment building in Northeast Portland, investigators were sifting through the rubble to find clues as to how the fire began.
The blaze drew all of Portland s fire resources early Thursday morning to an apartment complex on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The complex was under construction and no injuries were reported.
The fire could clearly be seen from downtown Portland.
It was shocking, said neighbor Ida Nyberg. It looked like Armageddon. It was horrifying.
Investigators said there was no clear cause of the fire. Electrical systems had not yet been hooked up in the complex, and they didn't believe anyone had been soldering or welding near the building.
Officials said it could be another week before the cause of the fire was determined.
Two lanes of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard were still closed through Friday and officials said the busy road would be compromised throught the weekend for the investigation.
