PORTLAND -- Fire heavily damaged a neighborhood bar, Pal's Shanty Tavern at 47th and Sandy Boulevard in Northeast Portland.

Fire and Rescue crews responded about 1:30 a.m. Friday to reports of an explosion and smoke.Firefighters called a second alarm to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

At one point firefighters were ordered to evacuate because it was too dangerous to be inside the burning building. No one was injured in the blaze.

The restaurant, known for buckets of steamer clams, oyster club sandwiches and favorable drink prices, dates back to the 1920s.

Ted Thieman was walking by after it started.

I was just gonna go on home. Then I saw the flames bursting out, right above it and there were firemen right there. Thieman said. It's really sad to see this happen. Because Pal's Shanty is a Hollywood institution, a Portland institution.

There was no immediate estimate of damage or indication of the cause of the fire. An owner of the restaurant told KGWdamages appeared to be confined to the kitchen and office area.
