MT. HOOD NATIONAL FOREST -- A dog lost near Punchbowl Falls Monday evening was found dead Tuesday, according to the Oregon Humane Society.
After a volunteer team searched for the dog, it was found dead in 12 feet of water. Crews were working to bring the dog to the trailhead.
The dog's owner said the 1-year-old labradoodle, named Max, went off the trail and was likely lost over the falls, said OHS spokesman David Lytle.
The owner reports that Max was not found in the water at the bottom of the falls (an 80 foot drop) and may be trapped on a ledge between the trail and the water, Lytle said.
Members of the volunteer search team are trained in mountain and water rescues and have conducted several rescues in the Gorge, Lytle said.
