PRINEVILLE, Ore. -- A man stole a fully-restored 1930 Ford Model A coupe Sunday and crashed it into the Crooked River south of Prineville, police said.
Prineville police officers were called to the report that a car had gone off of Highway 27 just after 3 p.m., according to Oregon State Police.
Before police arrived, Crook County Fire & Rescue paramedics found the driver, who witnesses said swam from the car to the shore.
He was later identified as 34-year-old Erik Blake Halpin. He was flown by helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend and treated for his injuries.
After his release, Halpin was jailed on the following charges:
- Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
- Driving under the influence of intoxicants
- Criminal mischief in the first degree
- Failure to perform the duties of a driver Involved in an accident
A tow company pulled the coupe from the river. A damage estimate was not available.
