PORTLAND -- Three more Portland restaurants are joining the growing number of eateries that offer street seats.

The city expanded the program started in 2012 to include SoMa Ecodistrict, Bonfire Lounge and Lompoc Brewing.

We're really excited about it, said Jerry Fetcher of Lompoc Brewing. The first time I've ever seen it was in Europe a few years ago.

The city will allow the businesses to use parking spaces in front of the restaurant for seating.

Each restaurant came up with a design and went to the city for permits. Part of the process included getting documented support from the neighborhood.

Mississippi Pizza has had street seating for a couple of years.

General Manager Amanda Oelgart thinks it's great.

It provides us with almost sixty more seats, Oelgart said. It's really great for summer.

Nearly a dozen restaurants are in the program.

They can operate street seating all year but some choose to only do it during warm months.

The city does not specify how many spaces restaurants can use. Most of the restaurant designs will take two to three spaces.

Restaurants will repay the city for any lost parking revenue.

Construction on the new street seating should begin in June.
