EUGENE, Ore. A military deserter convicted of child rape was apprehended Friday after a routine traffic stop, police said.
On Friday afternoon, Elmer Frederick Hoffman, 46, was stopped by a state trooper on Interstate 5 south of Eugene because his Ford Explorer was missing a front license plate, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police.
Neither Hoffman nor his female passenger had identification on them. Police took Hoffman into custody for not having a driver s license. Hoffman then said he would identify himself if he could say goodbye to his girlfriend and did so, according to police.
Hoffman was a military deserter who fled Missouri in March, during a court martial trial. He was convicted on 2 counts of child rape and 2 counts of indecent liberties with a child, Hastings said.
He was sent to Lane County Jail on local charges and held for US Army authorities. The woman was not arrested, police said.
