PORTLAND -- A woman came home Thursday evening to find her 34-year-old husband and her 4-year-old daughter dead after an apparent murder-suicide.
Police said Friday morning Jesse Willard killed his daughter, Maribella, and then killed himself.
Officers were dispatched to the home in the 4700 block of North Houghton Street just before 7 p.m. Homicide detectives were called in shortly after that to help with the investigation.
According to Sgt. Pete Simpson of Portland police, Maribella's mother came home from work and found both her husband and daughter dead.
Simpson said both Jesse and Maribella died of a single gunshot wound to the head. He said Jesse had struggled with mental health issues.
Neighbors said Maribella had an older sister and the two often played outside together. One neighbor told KGWthe immediate community was devastated by the news.
Simpson said when there are children involved it's a tough scene for everyone.
The trauma of a call like this extends beyond the home. It extends to first responders, extends to neighbors whose children may play here. It extends to the community that hears stories like this and it's understandably heartbreaking. Simpson said.
He encouraged those struggling with suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis to call 503-963-2575.
