VANCOUVER -- Police shot a man in downtown Vancouver early Thursday morning after responding to reports of a large crowd fighting and a man with a gun.

The incident unfolded about 1 a.m. at East 6th Avenue and Main Street, police said. After police arrived, gunfire broke out around 7th Avenue and Broadway.

Officers found a man shot in the foot. He refused medical treatment. While looking for suspects, police were confronted by a man with gun, who ignored commands to drop the weapon. One officer fired at and struck the man.

Witness Marcus Griffith told KGW he was looking out his bedroom window about 1 a.m. and noticed that police had someone in custody. About 1:20, he heard gunfire and called 911. Officers ordered passersby to lie on the ground.

He then saw a man on the ground between 6th and 7th with officers pointing weapons at him. He appeared to have a gunshot wound to his side, Griffith said.

Darryl E. Humphrey Jr., 21, of Portland was treated at a local hospital and subsequently booked into Clark County Jail for attempted murder and assault.
