PORTLAND --A 2-year-old boy found critically injured Tuesday in a Portland motel room, after allegedly being assaulted by his mother's boyfriend, has died.

An Astoria man, Joshua Howard, 28, had already been arrested on accusations of attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder, first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment.

The boy died about 5 p.m. Thursday at a Portland hospital.

Police arrived at the Unicorn Motel on Southeast 82nd Avenue at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the injured boy unconscious inside, police said.

One officer performed CPR until medical teams arrived. The boy was then taken to the hospital. Howard had called 911.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

A grand jury was expected to meet on the latest developments in the case and decide if Howard should be charged with aggravated murder.
