PORTLAND Driving rains and heavy winds from the latest storm caused trees to come crashing down across the Portland Metro Area Sunday night and Monday morning, knocking out power, blocking roads and damaging homes.

In Wilsonville, a tree slammed onto a home near Southwest Camelot Street and Southwest Brown Road early Monday morning.

The homeowner, Jane Gerrard, was trapped in bed by the fallen tree, according to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. A photo released by TVF&R showed the bed buried under rubble.

It was very dark in the room and I kind of look around me and I'm like, oh my gosh, there is a tree over me in my bed, Gerrard said. I saw this little gap ... and I thought, well I think I could climb out of that.

Gerrard was able to wiggle her way out of the debris and then drove herself to the hospital, where she found out she suffered a broken vertebrae.

Her son and two dogs were also in the home when the tree fell. They emerged unhurt.

Some said the family was lucky to make it out relatively unscathed.

The corner bedroom is pretty much destroyed, said Edward Laskaris with TVF&R. It came down right over the bed, just with wood, insulation, debris all over. Really amazing that anybody got out of that bedroom without major injuries.

The neighboring house also had roof and siding damage when it was clipped by the falling tree.

At Southeast 46th Avenue and Southeast Henry Street, a transformer exploded when a tree fell on power lines and a car.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation responded to 23 downed tree calls between 9:30 p.m. Sunday and 5:30 a.m. Monday, according to spokesman Dylan Rivera.

Despite the Presidents Day holiday, PBOT called in extra crews to clean downed trees out of roadways, Rivera said.
