SEASIDE, Ore. -- Temperatures in towns along the Oregon Coast felt more like summer than January Thursday.

In Seaside, the high temperature was 55 degrees and balmy. After the pounding the shoreline took last weekend, it was welcome relief to locals and visitors.

It was also good reason for many Portlanders who wanted to escape the winter doldrums.

The bright sun broke out early over the Pacific Ocean Thursday and the few people on the beach had it all to themselves.

In downtown Cannon Beach, the noon time weather pulled diners outside. Doris Frazier and her friend Maryanne Trumps said they fled Portland s cold, gray skies earlier in the day.

It s miserable in Portland, Frazier said. Temperature inversion sucks. So we come down here to get the sunshine and it s gorgeous.

A resident elk herd also seemed to be enjoying the sunshine, grazing behind the Cannon Beach tennis courts in the afternoon.

Friday was also expected to be a bright day at the beach with little in the way of clouds and temperatures in the upper 50s.

Then, on the weekend, most forecasts call for rain along the coast.
