GRESHAM, Ore. -- A Gresham woman shot by her estranged husband over the weekend has died, officials said.

Jessie Cavett, 27, was shot just before noon Saturday and her daughter was kidnapped, prompting an Amber Alert.

The Multnomah County medical examiner said Jessie Cavett had died Sunday evening. An autopsy showed she died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Friends and neighbors described a violent relationship between her and Cavett.

Ivan Rangel is a close friend of Jessie's and student at the Bella Institute School of Cosmetology in Southeast Portland, where Jessie was an instructor.

He said Jessie was in the process of getting a divorce and lived in fear of Joshua.

I don t know why it took forever, but apparently their divorce wasn t the easiest or nicest. She was afraid something like this might happen, Rangel said.

He described Jessie as a fun and carefree person who loved her 2 and 5-year-old daughters. Rangel said Jessie was getting ready to go to the pumpkin festival with her kids when Joshua showed up Saturday.

She had been threatened for quite some time, and I guess we all just didn t listen. She was afraid, Rangel said. She would text me sometimes at three in the morning saying I m afraid tonight. I m home alone and I m just afraid.

Joshua has a lengthy criminal record in Oregon and is a member of the Gypsy Jokers Motorcycle Club. In 2007, he was convicted of assault and several subsequent probation violations.

According to court records obtained by KGW, Jessie applied for a restraining order against him on Aug. 5.

Before moving to Gresham, Jessie lived in Southeast Portland where her neighbors would babysit for her two kids and see Joshua around.

He lived here for a while, but it was off and on. He did some jail time, said a woman who asked to not be identified. He really did love that little girl and would turn into a cupcake trying to play with her, but he was such a jerk otherwise. He was not a good human being.

Jessie s neighbor also described the couple s turbulent relationship.

She had said to us a couple of times that he had abused her and every time he d leave we d tell her Good riddance girl. Move on, she said. She just went back over and over. It was heartbreaking.

Police canceled the Amber Alert Saturday night after arresting Joshua, who was with his daughter in the 1500 block of Southwest Pleasant View Drive. A neighbor recognized him from news reports and called police.

He was booked in the Multnomah County Jail. He was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon to face charges of assault and murder.

Cavett s daughter was taken to the hospital to be evaluated. She was not injured.
