PORTLAND Although a recent study showed that Portlanders thought crime was increasing, Portland s crime rate so far in 2013 is the lowest since the mid-1960s.

Portland s crime rate for Part I crimes is down 9 percent in 2013, according to a report released by the Portland Police Bureau. Part I crimes are mostly violent crimes, such as murder, rape and robbery.

The last time crime rates in Portland were this low was in the mid-1960s. The lowest crime rates reported were in the early 1960s, and the highest were in the late 1980s.

Crime statistics are down, and that's to the credit of our police bureau and the community, said Mayor Charlie Hales. And it's proof that we're on the right track. Is there more to do? Obviously. Are we proud of these trends? Absolutely.

Analysts suggested the decline in crime in Portland and nationally could be attributed to the fall of crack cocaine use, baby boomers aging and police technology, among other factors.

Despite the low crime rate, a study done by Portland State University in 2012 showed Portland residents still thought crime was rising. Some study participants said that perception was due to media exposure.
