PORTLAND -- The third and final summer closure of Interstate 84 began Saturday at 11 p.m.

Westbound lanes of I-84 are closed from Interstate 205 to Interstate 5 until Monday morning at 5 a.m. for striping and installation of new signs

The I-84 paving process was finished during two previous weekend closures that caused traffic headaches and gridlock on around the stretch of highway.

A new configuration of the westbound I-84 merge with northbound I-5 will also be completed during the weekend closure.

Officials from the Oregon Department of Transportation recommend taking Lombard Street, Columbia Boulevard, Sandy Boulevard, Burnside Street and Powell Boulevard in order to get around the closure.

Drivers, however, should avoid Marine Drive, which will be closed between Northeast 33rd Avenue and Northeast 223rd Avenue for a triathlon.
