OREGON CITY, Ore. -- A family of five managed to escape the fire that destroyed their Oregon City home Tuesday morning.

Crews said they expected to spend a few hours putting out hot spots and small flare-ups. They faced several challenges while they battled the blaze, as the house was on a steep hill and near a lot of dry trees and brush.

A neighbor who called 911 said the fire consumed the house and it looked like a big ball of flames in the sky.

Fire investigators said they would not be able to get inside the home to look for a cause until the structure could be deemed safe. They said most of the damage was to the second and third floors.

The Red Cross was assisting the family.
