PORTLAND -- Workers at Daimler Trucks North America's plant in Portland have gone on strike after rejecting a contract offer that union negotiators recommended they accept.

Employees said they deserved higher raises after four years of wage freezes, according to Joe Kear, a spokesman for the workers.

The most recent pay increase offered by Daimler would have been offset by increased medical costs to employees, said Kear.

The Swan Island plant employs 725 union workers and makes up to 30 Western Star trucks a day.
