PORTLAND A police chase in Portland nearly ended when a driver crashed through a bus shelter early Wednesday morning. But the suspect ran away into a nearby neighborhood.

Police attempted to pull the driver over just after 2 a.m. and he sped away, crashing just a few blocks away into the bus shelter at East Burnside Street and Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

The driver jumped out of the car and ran away, police said.

One worker with a pickup truck arrived at about 5 a.m. and cleaned up the mess. Police had not arrested the driver.
