EUGENE, Ore. -- A ban on plastic bags takes effect Wednesday in Eugene stores.

The ban was approved six months ago by the city council as an environmental measure.

KVAL reports shoppers can bring their own reusable bags or buy paper bags for a nickel.

Thin plastic bags will still be available in Eugene grocery stores for meat and produce.
