PORTLAND -- Portland police are searching for a man who stabbed a TriMet bus driver as he was exiting a portable restroom in Portland's Lents neighborhood last Saturday night.

On Wednesday officers released a sketch of the suspect.

Police say the bus operator, 35-year-old Brian Nixon, was using the restroom when someone banged on the door. When the driver opened the door, the man, described as possibly a transient, demanded to use the bathroom and then stabbed him in the leg.

The suspect ran away. He was an African-American man in his 30s, about 5 foot 9 and wearing a black and red coat, brown pants and a stocking cap.

Nixon was taken to a Portland hospital for a stab wound that was considered not life-threatening.

Our thoughts are with the operator hurt in the assault last night in Southeast Portland. While we are thankful that the physical injury sustained by the operator was minor and he is reportedly doing well, such senseless acts are disturbing. TriMet is providing full cooperation and assistance to police in their efforts to catch the man responsible so he will not be able to hurt anyone else in our community, TriMet said in a statement released Sunday.
