SAN FRANCISCO -- After several venues cancelled her upcoming shows on the heels of what was perceived as an anti-gay rant during a concert, singer Michelle Shocked issued a statement saying she's damn sorry.

The comments she made during a show at Yoshi's in San Francisco Sunday night reportedly included the phrase, You are going to leave here and tell people 'Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots.' But she told the San Francisco Chronicle Wednesday she does not believe in or preach intolerance.

I'm accused of believing that 'God hates fags' and that the repeal of Prop 8 will usher in the End Times, her statement to the newspaper read. Well, if I caused such an absurdity, I am damn sorry. To be clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a member of any so-called faith preaching intolerance of anyone.

I was predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted, she added. The show was all music, and the audience tweets said they enjoyed it. The commentary came about ten minutes later, in the encore. And to those fans who are disappointed by what they've heard or think I said, I'm very sorry: I don't always express myself as clearly as I should.

The Alberta Rose Theatre was among the venues that cancelled one of her shows after news of the rant spread. The theater opted instead to do something useful and positive for the community, its Facebook page read. A benefit concert for Basic Rights Oregon was planned for April 25.
