SALEM -- A state Senate committee voted to allow young illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at Oregon universities if they were brought to the U.S. as children.

The Senate Education and Workforce Development Committee approved the measure on a 3-2 party-line vote on Tuesday, setting the stage for a vote in the full Senate later this week.

The bill is likely to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate. It was already approved in the House, and Gov. John Kitzhaber says he'll sign it.

Illegal immigrants who graduate from Oregon high schools and meet university entrance requirements would be eligible for lower tuition rates paid by Oregon residents.
