FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- A 6-year-old boy playing with matches started a fire Wednesday night on his bed, according to Forest Grove Fire and Rescue.
During the investigation into the cause of the fire, the grandson admitted that he had found a pack of matches in the home while his grandparents slept and he had crawled onto the top bunk and began to light the matches, dropping one onto his mattress, said David Nemeyer with Forest Grove Fire and Rescue.
Investigators said the boy awakened his sleeping grandparents once the fire started and they safely escaped the double-wide mobile home.
Three cats and a number of pet birds died in the smoky fire.
This is the second fire in less then a month in the Grove Mobile Home Park, located at 3831 Pacific Avenue, Nemeyer said. In both incidents, firefighters found the homes to be without working smoke alarms.
