PORTLAND Friends, family and coworkers are mourning the loss of a 20-year-old woman killed by a car on an Old Town sidewalk early Sunday morning.

Rebbecca Bray of Gresham was celebrating a friend's birthday when she and another friend were hit by a car following a two-car crash. The two had been walking to meet their designated driver, said Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau.

Bray was pronounced dead at the scene. Her friend, 21-year-old Brandi Butner of Fairview, suffered severe injuries, but she was expected to survive.

A father never wants to get a call in the middle of the night like that, her father said. They were just walking on the sidewalk.

Brent Warstler, 42, of Cornelius was driving a pickup and ran a red light, then crashed into a cab before hitting the pedestrians, Simpson said. Warstler was charged with manslaughter, assault, reckless driving, and DUII.

We're all just kind of in shock, you know? Ten seconds earlier or later, and she'd be here working right now, said friend and coworker Amber Garrow. Saturday was her first day off in over two weeks. She was excited to go out. She had requested the night off, especially for her friend's birthday.

It's heartbreaking. She was such a beautiful person, Garrow added. She was just excited to be alive and meet people, and she always had fun. The nicest, most genuine person I ever knew.

Just baffled, totally thrown off guard, said her friend Katie Rose. It was very selfish of the guy that was driving under the influence, and I feel so heartfelt for her family. She was taken too early, just too soon.

Three others were injured in the crash.
