PORTLAND -- The Portland Winterhawks (26-5-1-0) struck for three power play goals in a 4-2 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips (13-21-0-2) Friday at the Rose Garden in front of 5,668 fans.
Brendan Leipsic got the Hawks on the board quickly when he finished a great passing sequence with a power play goal 1:46 into the game. Portland then made Everett pay again on a subsequent power play with Derrick Pouliot feeding a terrific cross-ice pass to Adam de Champlain, who beat Everett netminder Austin Lotz to make it 2-0 at the 5:06 mark, a score that would last through the end of the period.
Like they did in the first period, the Hawks scored an early goal in the second with Nic Petan netting the team s third power play marker of the game 2:43 into the frame to put Portland ahead 3-0. The Silvertips got on the board when Landon Oslanski scored with a two-man advantage at the 9:48 mark to cut Portland s lead to 3-1. The Hawks regained the three-goal lead at the 12:42 mark when Taylor Leier went high over Lotz s shoulder to make it 4-1, which remained the score going into the third.
Oslanski scored his second of the night at the 18:01 mark of the third to make it 4-2, but that was as close as Everett would get.
Brendan Burke earned his 10th win of the season, making 24 saves on 26 Everett shots. Lotz took the loss for the Silvertips, allowing four goals on 38 Portland shots.
The Hawks finished 3-8 on the power play, and 6-7 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks are back on the ice tomorrow when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. in the popular Teddy Bear Toss game, which is already sold out.
