BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A Beaverton man pleaded guilty Monday to assault and other charges were dismissed after the man's five-year-old niece crashed a car into a neighbor's minivan, injuring the owner.

Derrick Hess, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years probation.

Hess, 29,of Beaverton was teaching his 5-year-old niece how to

start his car in a driveway on Northwest Scott Street.Hess was sitting in the passenger's seat whilehis niece started the car from the driver's seat, according to police.

The girl s foot slipped off the clutch of the manual transmission car, causing her to lose control.

The girl crashed into a neighbor s minivan, causinga woman to break her pelvis, police said.
