BEND, Ore. -- Two ultra runners from Bend narrowly escaped the flames as they were caught up in the Pole Creek Fire early Sunday morning.

As first reported by KTVZ, marathon runner Ian Sharman said he and his friend Rod Bien parked at the Pole Creek Trailhead and went for a run on Middle Sister.

They spotted a small fire miles away as they climbed the mountain, but did not consider it a threat. When they got back to the car, the road out was filled with smoke and they saw several other cars on fire.

It was only when we were trying to find a way past it that I was like, There s a car on fire! And we reversed course and got out as fast as we could, Sharman said.

They drove out on a dirt road with the help of several phone calls to emergency services.

Hikers and campers were later evacuated from the area. Four vehicles were burned at the trailhead.

Sharman documented the event on his blog.
