DUNDEE, Ore. -- The Yamhill County District Attorney's Office on Thursday released more details about the murders of a Dundee mother and children and the suicide of her estranged husband.

Randall Engels, 37, Amy Engels, 35, their son Jackson and their daughter Bailey were found shot to death after officers forced their way inside the home on July 4, police said.

Amy Engels, and the two Engels children each died from gunshot wounds to the head, an autopsy showed. Randall Engels died of a single gunshot to the head that was determined to be self-inflicted.

Amy had moved out of the home in April with their children and was seeking a divorce.

A report released Thursday outlined the events that led up to what District Attorney Bradley Berry described as a familicide at the hand of Randall Engels.

It said that in early June, Randall told a co-worker he got a gun for protection against someone who was disrespecting his family but never elaborated on who that was.

Investigators also said that Randall wanted to control Amy and had been trying to talk her out of the divorce. He also got into contact with her through text messages by pretending to be another man, named Brian.

Obviously in most relationships containing domestic violence, 'control' is a primary motivator of the perpetrator. This separate persona created by Randall fits into this pattern of exerting control without Amy realizing she was sharing personal information with him that she would not have otherwise done, Berry explained.

The DA's report said that on the day of the murders, Randall was to take the children to the St. Paul Rodeo and convinced Amy to come with them. They were to meet for pizza in Newberg, but he persuaded her to come to their Dundee home for lunch instead. Investigators at the murder scene said Amy and the children had been in the dining room and the food was on the table when they were shot to death.

Detectives pieced together evidence at the scene that clearly showed that Randall killed his wife and children, and then killed himself, Berry said. These tragic deaths were the result of multiple murders and a suicide all at the hands of Randall Engels. No further investigation is warranted.
