PORTLAND - The Portland School Board voted Monday night to close the Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women and close Humboldt school, merging it with Boise-Eliot.
A budget shortfall of $27.5 million forced the district to make the difficult choices. The cutting process continues with the potential layoffs of 110 teachers and 30 positions in the district's central office.
Both schools will close with the end of classes in June.
We ve heard state legislators tell us that they provided stable funding for education, but not adequate funding, said board member Greg Belisle, who voted to close both schools. We wouldn t be talking about closing schools if we had a better answer to the bigger question of statewide school funding.
Board member Matt Morton voted against the resolution to close the schools.
We have had a number of people come forward to offer support. We should allow time to explore whether these partnerships can help, he said.
High school students at Tubman can go to the Jefferson Middle College for Advanced Studies. Middle school students will transfer to their neighborhood K-8 or middle school.
