PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Bureau of Transportation advised drivers to expect congestion and crowds for the first at-home Portland Timbers soccer game around rush hour Thursday.

More than 18,000 fans were expected at Jeld-Wen Field. Commuters were advised to avoid the area around the stadium in Southwest Portland.

Game time is 8 p.m.

SW 18th Avenue will be closed to drivers beginning at 7:30 p.m. and SW Morrison Street will be closed to eastbound drivers at 5 p.m. Streets should reopen several hours after the end of the game.

Drivers were advised to park downtown and walk or take transit to the stadium.

Extra trains and express buses will operate to and from the stadium. The city is also hiking on-street parking rates near the field, while offering special evening rates at Smart-Park garages downtown.

Timbers game day information is available at www.portlandonline.com/transportation/timbers.
