SALEM-- The National Rifle Association has endorsed democrat Kurt Schrader for the 5th congressional district in Oregon.
The NRAWeb site states that the association opted to support Schrader because he co-signed several bills in Congress favored by the NRA.
Schrader has been in a very tough re-election race and welcomed the endorsement.
I'm excited, proud, and frankly expected it. I'm a gun owner, a defender of the second amendment forever. I enjoy shooting quite a bit. I think I've been good on their issues, said Schrader.
The first term democrat hopes the endorsement will help him stand out in mid-term elections.
I think its huge to be frank in this race, said Schrader. I think it puts to rest the mythology of Kurt Schrader being a Washington DC --Pelosi clone or something like that. This blows right through that, he said.
On the other side, his opponent, Republican Scott Bruun also got an A rating from the NRA. But not the endorsement.
I have the highest rating that the NRA gives a challenger. Voters in my current legislative district, and voters in the fifth district know where I stand on second amendment issues--I'm very strong on second amendment issues, said Bruun.
Oregon's fifth district stretches from Lake Oswego to Salem and out along much of the coast.
