OREGON CITY, Ore. -- Animal rights group PETA recognized firefighters for safely removing a pet camel from a sinkhole.

Responders from Clackamas Fire District No. 1 spent several hours rescuing a 1500-lb camel Wednesday. A video of the incident quickly gained worlwide attention.

Friday the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals bestowed upon them the Compassionate Fire Department Award.

Clackamas County is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect and serve both residents and their beloved animals, PETA Vice President Tracy Reiman said.

The fire disttrict will receive a letter of appreciation and a framed certificate.
