But where is everyone headed? And how are they getting there? AAA released some numbers and facts for the holiday weekend.

This year is shaping up to be the second busiest Memorial Day weekend for traveling since 2000. AAA says 36.1 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles from home this weekend, compared to 35.5 million in 2013, and 35.1 million in 2012.

  • The Oregon Coasst
  • Central Oregon
  • Seattle
  • Crater Lake

Other popular summer destinations include Yellowstone, Canyonlands, Disneyland, and Universal Studios.

And Americans are mostly driving to these destinations. Here's how the country is getting places this Memorial Day weekend:

  • 88% - about 31.8 million people are driving
  • 7% - more than 2.6 million people are flying
  • 5% - 1.7 million people are using other modes of transportation (including cruises, trains, buses, and more)

This is the highest rate of car travelers since 2005.

Luckily, that road trip will cost you less this year, as gas prices are down from last Memorial Day. AAA says it looks like gas prices have peaked for the spring, thanks to rising supplies. And that means gas prices are getting lower.

The national average hit its high for the year so far on April 28th at $3.70 a gallon. Washington's average gas price is now $3.89, and Oregon's is $3.87. This is a big improvement from the Oregon average last Memorial Day, which was $3.95.

So while you're getting ready to head out this weekend, even if you're sitting in traffic, just remember, at least your gas didn't cost you $3.95 a gallon!
