PORTLAND -- This week is National Travel and Tourism week. Its been a banner time for Oregon, the city and Portland International Airport.
Two million international visitors arrive through PDX a year. Most first-time travelers to our state land at PDX and it's where they form their first impression of Oregon.
Many of those people are International travelers. To make them feel welcome, plans are underway to roll out a new welcome mat.
One big change will be the carpet. The iconic blue-green with a couple of stripes is being replaced for something a bit more 2014.
Another big change will be that most of the retail shops will be moved to the other sides of the security gates.
And because we use our smartphones for boarding passes, you'll see the ticket counter area shrink.
While PDX has been ranked of the best airport five years out of the last seven, those in charge know there is always room for improvement.
We want to make sure that we are welcoming, said Todd Davidson, CEO of Travel Oregon. We want to represent all that Oregon has to offer. And that they [travelers] know they've been welcomed to Portland and welcomed to Oregon.
Oregon tourism contributes $9.6 billion to the states economy along with 94,000 jobs. Of those jobs,10,000 are at the PDX.
