PORTLAND -- Last weekend was supposed to be a pre-Valentines shopping bonanza for local shops. Mother Nature had other plans with a winter blast. But, thanks to social media, the holiday weekend Is now having a change of heart.

Our small business got slammed during the winter storm, said City Commissioner Nick Fish. Today on Valentine s Day it's our chance to show them some love by shopping local.

When the snow fell a week ago, Fish started a Twitter campaign to encourage folks to support their neighborhood businesses.

It worked.

Venture Portland, which represents 50 neighborhood shopping areas around the city picked up on the theme and created #pdxLOVESsmallbiz. 19,000 businesses are now part of the support local movement.

At Oblation Papers and Press on Northerdy 12th Dtreet in the Pearl, Valentines is their biggest card holiday.

A real handmade paper card or a letter press printed card or a local artist made card is a true gift, said Oblation co-owner Jennifer Rich. and it's much more precious then it use to be.

With Valentine s Day on a Friday, it means local retailers get a weekend bonus of shopping.
