PORTLAND -- A new survey ranks both Portland and Seattle in the top 10 cities for urban forests.

The survey by American Forests, a non-profit group which restores and protects forest lands, gave Portland high marks for creating Waterfront Park along the Willamette River and having more than 1 million trees throughout the city.

Portland's Forest Park is the largest natural forest inside city limits of any metropolitan area in the United States.

Jenn Cairo, an urban forester working with Portland Parks & Recreation, said trees bring many benefits, including improved air quality, better storm water runoff and reduced energy costs.

It is estimated that the annual value of savings brought by the city's trees is in the tens of millions of dollars.
