PORTLAND -- The unemployment rate for the Portland Metro area was unchanged at 7.8 percent for the month of December, according to labor statistics.
An estimated 88,000 area residents were unemployed and looking for work, said Amy Vander Vliet of the Oregon Employment Department. The rate a year earlier was 8.5 percent.
On a seasonally-adjusted basis, preliminary estimates from the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate nonfarm payroll employment declined by 1,000 jobs in December, she said.
She added that revised estimates for November showed a loss of 800 jobs, rather than the gain of 600 that was initially reported.
